HUNDREDS CELEBRATE SOCCER COMPLEX RE-OPENING AT CROCKER AMAZON PARK IN SAN FRANCISCO
Block-Party Style Ribbon-Cutting Event for $10,100,000 Field Renovation
San Francisco, CA – The City Fields Foundation, Mayor Newsom’s Office, Supervisor Sandoval, the Recreation and Park Department and hundreds of neighbors, athletes and families cut the ribbon Sunday, September 21st, on a newly renovated soccer complex at Crocker Amazon Playground in San Francisco.

The $10,100,000 soccer fields renovation expanded the park’s three over-used and worn-out soccer fields (that were effectively closed for half the year) into five, year-round synthetic turf fields lined for soccer and lacrosse. Additional improvements to the fields include new lights featuring automatic and online controls, a new concession building and vendor, a maintenance building, native and drought resistant landscaping, and minor improvements to the adjacent skate park.
By adding soccer fields and converting sod to synthetic turf, the renovated soccer fields are expected to add more than 12,000 hours of play to the city’s over-taxed athletic fields system. This additional play time will go a long ways to reducing the City’s chronic deficit in athletic fields. An independent 2004 analysis found that San Francisco would have to add 33 new soccer fields just to meet current demand.
Location: Geneva Ave. between Moscow St. and Brookdale Ave.
District: 11
Brief Description: Crocker Amazon Playground is located in the heart of an ethnically diverse neighborhood with more kids and families than any other district in San Francisco; over 4,000 youth ages 10-17 live within a one-mile radius of the field.
Before Renovation: There were three soccer fields available for play, however, the fields were closed annually from September through February to recover from overuse.
After Renovation: The grass soccer fields have been replaced with artificial turf and redesigned to accommodate five full-size soccer fields available for play year-round regardless of the weather. The existing field lights will be replaced with new lights to allow for shorter light poles and more focused light on the fields. The new fields will add approximately 12,358 hours of playtime on the soccer fields per year - enough time to host soccer games for 395,450 players, including the City’s more than 1,500 K-12 school and youth league teams. A bathroom/concession building and maintenance building will also be constructed.
